Seventy Percent of Identity Theft Victims Helped by ITAC Report They Do Not Know the Source of the Crime
Nearly 70% of the 2,695 victims who used ITAC Victim Assistance in 2011 do not know the source of the crime, according to a survey by ITAC, the Identity Theft Assistance Center. Of the victims who did know the source of the crime, more than a quarter said it was computer related (hacker/virus/phishing). Read more...

ITAC, the Identity Theft Assistance Center, is a supporting coalition member of National Protect Your Identity Week (www.protectyouridnow.org).

In recognition of this national day of fraud prevention, we encourage consumers to take ITAC’s ID Protection quiz  to assess their risk of identity theft. The first 1,500 visitors who take the ITAC ID Protection quiz will receive six months identity monitoring service free-of-charge.

ITAC advocates education as essential in combating identity theft. “ITAC is there to help consumers recover from identity theft but our goal is to keep consumers from being victimized in the first place,” said ITAC President Anne Wallace. “It’s impossible to overstate the importance of safeguarding your personal information to prevent identity theft.”
